Dussehra Recipe: Chickpea Sundal
Chickpea Sundal

Chickpea Sundal This is a tasty and filling dish for Dussehra! You can omit the chilies if your children do not like spicy things.

What You Need:

  • 2 cups of chickpeas
  • 2-3 tbsp fresh grated coconut
  • 2 dried red chilies, roughly chopped (optional)
  • 7-8 curry leaves
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • A pinch of hing (asafetida)
  • A pinch of salt
  • 2 tbsp oil or ghee
  • Fresh coriander leaves for a garnish

How to Make:

  1. Soak chickpeas overnight in warm water, and then pressure-cook until almost done. Drain the chickpeas and set them aside.
  2. Heat the oil or ghee in a deep pan.
  3. Add the mustard seeds and hing.
  4. Turn down to a medium heat.
  5. When the mustard seeds begin to splutter, add the curry leaves and the red chilies.
  6. When the mixture starts to give off a strong smell, add the chickpeas and cook for 7-10 mins.
  7. Add the coconut and salt and mix well.
  8. Serve warm, garnished with chopped coriander leaves.
