'' The Murudeshwar Beach at Mangalore is another beach with a major tourist attraction from the upcoming beaches in south India. Although it is famous mainly as a religious city that is home to the famous Murudeshwar temple, it is also acquiring an increasing number of pan India and foreign visitors with a beautiful beach in the offing. The beach leading up to the sacred hillock, thrusting out to the sea, is wide and long, dotted with occasional fishing boats. Viewing the sun sinking into the gilded sea at dusk, from the headland of the promontory, is a favoured activity with visitors. ''

Murudeshwar has a rich past and is home to the second tallest Shiva statue in the world. Located on the western coast of Karnataka the place dates back to the days of the Ramayana and is famous for the huge Lord Shiva statue on the beach that overlooks the entire town.

The statue of Lord Shiva was resplendent and women in bright saris stood in their own reflections, as the tide swept in, dabbling for shellfish. Fishermen assured us that it's a safe beach and we did see a few brave swimmers but it's not quite the Goan-Calangute scene.
