'' Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) situated in the Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh is one of the least disturbed Western Himalayan representative Eco Systems, supporting an extremely diverse wildlife population. It harbors one of the few known viable population of Western Tragopan ,alongwith more than 300 species of birds and over 30 species of mammals.
The park is located in the Seraj Forest Division of Kullu District in Himachal Pradesh some 60 km southwest of Kullu town. It is the southeast it is bounded by Rupi Bhaba Sanctuary in, Pin Valley National Park in the east, and Kanwar Wildlife Sanctuary in the North. On the geographical map, the park extends from the latitudes 31º38 - 31º55 North and 77º20' - 77º46 in the East.

Climate of the region is hotter during the summers and more rain during the monsoon, quite contrary to the climatic condition prevailing in the Upper Beas region of Himachal Pradesh. Also there is less snowfall during the winters making the climatic condition here more similar to front zones like Shimla and other places in Himachal Pradesh.
The park was built in the year 1984 and spread over an area of 1,171 km2 that lies between an altitude of 1500 to 6000m. Vast areas of alpine pastures and glaciers cap this park. This area has many important wildlife species of Western Himalayas, like Musk deer, Brown bear, Goral, Thar, Leopard, Snow leopard, Bharal, Serow, Monal, Kalij, Koklas, Cheer, Tragopan, Snow cock etc. Trekking of Rakti-Sar, origin of Sainj river and camping in alpine pastures is unforgettable. Similar is the trekking route to Tirath the origin of Tirthan river. The best seasons time for tourist to visiting the park are summer from April to June and autumn from September to November.

The best time to visit the park is April to June and September to November when the weather and visibility is good. The park area offers very good opportunity for the visitors to feel nature from close quarters and observe wildlife.
How to Reach there
Air: Great Himalayan National Park is Bhuntar near Kullu at a distance of around 60 km. There are regular flights to Delhi operated by Indian Airlines.
Rail: Joginder Nagar near Mandi is the nearest railhead for Great Himalayan National Park. There are regular trains from Joginder Nagar Railway Station to other parts of the country.
Road: To get to the Great National Himalayan Park one has to take the eastern divergence at Aut on the Kullu- Manali highway. Aut is 45-km from Mandi and 30-km from Kullu. From Largi which is 4-km from Aut, two routes, one along the Sainj Nala, motorable till Neuli (26-km) and the other along Tirthan Nala, motorable upto Gushaini (28-km) lead to the park.
