Indian Embassy launches scholarship programme for Non-Resident Indians
The 2018-2019 Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children has officially been launched according to the Indian Embassy in Muscat.
The Indian government launched the programme in 2006 to help the children of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) pursue undergraduate courses in Indian higher educational institutions.
Under the scheme, financial assistance for specific undergraduate professional and non-professional courses, with the exception of medical and related courses, is provided towards tuition fees, admission fees and post admission services.
The scheme is applicable to NRIs and PIOs living in 66 select countries, including Oman.
As part of the programme, scholarships shall be provided to 150 selected students, without earmarking. Out of these 150 scholarships, fifty are earmarked for Children of Indian workers (CIWG) in the seventeen Emigration Check Required (ECR) countries, subject to fulfilling eligibility conditions. Of these 50 scholarships, one third shall be reserved for children who are pursuing studies in India, also subject to eligibility conditions.
Currently, the seventeen ECR countries include Afghanistan, Bahrain, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
