New Delhi : To facilitate ease of compliance by the taxpayers, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the date for linking Aadhaar with PAN has been extended till 31st December 2017. The earlier deadline to link Aadhaar with PAN was by 31st August 2017. With this move, if individuals haven’t been able to link the two important identification documents, they get four months to do it. The move comes at a time when the government has granted a similar extension for the furnishing of Aadhaar for availing the benefits of various social welfare schemes.
The CBDT has also extended the ‘due-date’ for filing Income Tax Returns and various reports of audit prescribed under the Income-tax Act,1961, from September 30, 2017 to October 31, 2017 for all taxpayers who were liable to file their Income Tax Returns by September 30, 2017. In case if you were not able to link the two cards due to errors, you can do it now without wasting much of your time.
Here’s how you can correct your Aadhaar errors online:
- Step 1: Visit the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) website https://uidai.gov.in/
- Step 2: Choose the “Update Aadhaar Details (Online)” option that is below the Aadhaar Update section after which the user will then be redirected to the Aadhaar Self Service Update Portal.
- Step 3: Enter your Aadhaar number and carry on with the authentication process. Once every detail is filled, you will get an OTP on your mobile. (The mobile number has to be a registered one)
- Step 4: Then enter the data updating request page and submit your Aadhaar card name change/ correction/ surname change and click submit.
- Step 5: After filling the details, a user will have to attach the documents in the documents upload section. A user will be needed to scan and upload soft-copies of supporting self-attested proof of identity document for Aadhaar card name change/ correction/ surname.

- Step 6: Once the details are filled and submitted and documents are attached correctly, you will be given your Aadhaar card Update Request Number. A user can use this request number to track the status of your request.
For correcting your Aadhaar details online, it has to be noted that you can avail the option only if you have registered your mobile number with Aadhaar as mobile number is mandatory to receive password for login.
Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act says that every person having PAN as on July 1, 2017, and eligible to obtain Aadhaar, must intimate his Aadhaar number to the tax authorities. As per reports by PTI, the Supreme Court is hearing petitions challenging the government’s decision on Aadhaar and has posted the matter for next hearing in November and hence the extension of date for PAN-Aadhaar linking was in line.
It has to be noted that those categorised as non-resident Indians as per the Income Tax laws, people who are not citizens of India, those above 80 years of age and residents of the states of Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu and Kashmir had been exempt from the requirement. To file income tax returns, it is mandatory for the tax payer to link Aadhaar and PAN. The deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar previously was July 31 but was extended to August 31.
In August, the government informed that the Unique Identification Authority of India had deactivated close to 81 lakh Aadhaar numbers while as on July 27, more than 11.44 lakh permanent account numbers (PANs) were deleted or de-activated in cases where multiple PANs were found allotted to one person.
