NRI association discusses demonetisation issue with Sushma
Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and persons of Indian origin (PIO) are still struggling with demonetisation with at least Rs 75,000 crores lying with them in demonetized notes.
NEW YORK: Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and persons of Indian origin (PIO) are still struggling with demonetisation with at least Rs 75,000 crores lying with them in demonetized notes. The issue was brought up as a delegation from Gopio (Global Organization of People of Indian Origin) met external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj in New York recently.
"The minister said the Centre had provided window for NRIs to deposit their currencies earlier. However, that window was not open for diaspora Indians with foreign citizenship and the government would not be able to provide another such chance," said Gopio chairman Thomas Abraham, who headed the delegation.
The issues of Aadhaar card, PIO participation in Make in India, Clean India, and resettlement of NRIs rescued from middle east were also discussed during the meeting.
Apart from the officials of Gopio, Consul General of Indian in New York Sandeep Chakravorty also participated in the meeting.
