New Delhi : The Election Commission of India has launched a web portal for Non-resident Indians (NRIs) to cast their votes in elections. Overseas Indians can visit the web portal and register for voting rights. Overseas Indian citizens, who haven’t acquired any other citizenship, are eligible for registration. The registered NRIs will qualify for voting. However, they wouldn’t be issued voter IDs; their passport would suffice. According to reports, one crore NRIs would be allowed to vote through postal ballot.

The web portal was launched days after the government cleared a proposal to extend the facility of voting in Assembly and General elections by electronic means and proxy to NRIs by amending the Representation of the People Act. There are nearly one crore NRIs across the world, of whom 24,348 are registered with the Election Commission, the poll panel informed the government earlier this month.

Follow steps given below to register on Election Commission’s web portal for NRIs:

• Visit Election Commission’s website eci.nic.in
• Click on ‘Overseas Voters’ Portal’
• It will take you to eci.nic.in/OverseasVoters
• Fill the required details and register

While NRIs and overseas Indians are free to cast their votes in constituencies where they are registered, as per the new proposal of the government, they would also be allowed to use the option of proxy, which as of now is only available to service personnel. Another option would be to use postal ballots delivered to them by electronic means to cast their votes.
