Magnetic Hills of Ladhakh
The uncommon phenomenon here is that the car moves itself when put in neutral gear. The car moves up a steep mountain road at a steady speed of 10km/hr or above depending on the type of vehicle. It is a hill near picturesque Leh. The hills have magnetic properties which attracts metallic objects, making vehicles move up at a speed of about 20 km per hour. The “magnetic hill” is located on the Leh-Kargil-Batalik national highway, about 50 km from Leh, at a height of 14,000 feet above sea level. Today the places has become a popular sight seeing place where tourists are amazed to see their car moving on its own.
Living Root Bridges of Cherrapunji
There is an unusual formation of trees in the gradients of Khasi and Jaintia Hills in Cherrapunji. There is a rubber tree having 3000 feet long roots slinking its way along the gradient. The trees stick to the upper area and the roots are elongated to the riverbed hence providing natural bridges between the rivers. This mystifying sight bewitches the mind of the tourists instantly.
Skeleton Lake, Roopkund, Uttarakhand
The Roopkund Lake or the Mystery Lake OR the Skeleton Lake is a stunning glacial lake in Uttarakhand, and is called so because of the scores of human skeletons that were found in it. Yes, somewhere at 1600-feet above sea level, in a lake that remains frozen for most part of the year, mass deaths happened.
These skeletons, which were discovered by a forest ranger in 1942 (the horror!), have been dated back to the 9th century. Local legend believes that the skeletons belong to the troupe of a king from Kannauj who was travelling with his pregnant wife and servants, and died in a hailstorm at Roopkund.
Karni Mata Mandir, Rajasthan
The Karni Mata temple is located in a small town called Deshnoke in Rajasthan. Its claim to fame is the huge number of rats that are revered here. The temple has about 20,000 rats roaming its premises.
Quirk factor: Food nibbled by the rats is considered exceptionally holy. If a rat is killed, it has to be replaced by a rat of gold!
Red Rain, Idukki of Kerala
The Idukki and Kottayam districts of Kerala witnessed a strange phenomenon when the red-colored rain occurred there. This hued rainfall has occurred on myriad instances since 1986 and from that time, such type of rain has been recorded several times. The most recent one was in 2012. The solid pigments extracted from water were identical to biological cells.
Mass Bird Suicide, Jatinga, Assam
Jatinga Village is located in Dima Hasao of Assam. This place is more often than not the talk of town as well as among the explorers and scientists because of the mysterious bird suicides that happen here. A horde of migratory birds comes here in the evening, especially in the months of September and October, to crash themselves to death. Several efforts were made by the scientist to solve the mystery of Jatinga.
Floating Island of Loktak, Manipur
Loktak lake located in Moirang about 48 km. off Imphal in Manipur. It is known as the largest freshwater lake in North-Eastern India. The lake became popular because of the presence of floating islands known as Phumdis. These Phumdis are heterogeneous mass of soil, vegetation, and other organic matters.
Great Wall of India, Kumbhalgarh Fort
You must have heard of the Great Wall of China, right! Well you will be surprised to know that Kumbhalgarh fort also boasts a gigantic wall that is built around the periphery of a fort; it stretches over a distance of 36 kilometres. This wall is among the preserved heritage destinations in India. It is the second largest wall after that of China. Moreover, it is still unnoticed by most of the explorers. According to legends, this wall was edified to guard 3000 primeval temples located inside the fort.
Kodinhi Village of Twins, Kerala
Umri (a village) is the producer of largest number of twins in the world. Umri can be referred as the village of twins. A small village located near Allahabad is famous for its unusual twin population, which is not only limited to humans but animals too. There are 120 twins living in this village of 2,500 families. The village boasts a twin monozygotic (MZ) or identical twin birth rate that is 300 times the national average and perhaps the highest in the world.
Hanging Pillar of Lepakshi, Andhra Pradesh
Lepakshi Temple, located in Andhra Pradesh, is undoubtedly a marvel of ancient architecture. There are in total 70 pillars in the temple of which one pillar hangs without any support and surprisingly does not touch the earth as well! Tourists use to pass thin objects under it to check whether the claims are true. As per the local faith, passing objects under this pillar brings happiness in one’s life.
Balancing rock of Mahabalipuram
The enormous balancing rock, also known as Krishna’s Butter Ball, is a prime tourist attraction in Mahabalipuram. This rock is 5 meters in diameter and is positioned on a smooth gradient. It seems to defy all the laws of physics. It offers shed to all those who dare to sit underneath it.

Great Banyan tree, Kolkata
Imagine yourself in a place that looks like a woodland but in fact it is just a banyan tree! Sounds exciting? The Great Banyan Tree, situated in Acharya Jagdish Chandra Bose Indian Botanical Garden near Kolkata, embraces the world’s widest banyan tree. This tree is immense beyond imagination and is 250 years old. The original trunk of this tree seems to be lost in the cluster of the roots and the aerial roots make it appear like a forest. Interestingly, these roots are 25 meters above the surface!
Phuktal Monastery, Ladakh
This one could easily be missed by the human eye. Built into a cave facing a cliff, like a honeycomb, the monastery easily blends with its sandy surroundings in the Zanskar valley in Ladakh. To reach the place, one has to do a treacherous 3-day trek from Padum. How it was constructed, in the 12th century, is beyond imagination. It is undoubtedly the loneliest monastery in the world.
The Ghost Town of Rajasthan
Merely 18kms from Jaisalmer, there lies a small village known as Kuldhara, that is believed to be cursed! Yes, cursed and no one lives there! Once a lively settlement of Paliwal Brahmins resided here, but one night in 1825 everyone from that village and its adjoining 85 villages just packed their bags and left and no one ever lived there again. Even in pictures it looks like a Ghost Town!
Bullet Baba in Rajasthan
Om Banna (real name: Om Sing Rathore) was a biker who died when his motorcylce fell into a ditch on the Pali-Jodhpur highway in Rajasthan. The police came and took possession of the bike. But the next morning the bike was found at the accident spot. When the police seized the bike again, this time chaining it, it was still found at the accident site the next morning. What was even more spooky was that the fuel tank of the bike was empty. The spot has now been made into a shrine named “Bullet Baba Temple” and travellers, especially bikers, stop by to pay their tributes to Om Banna.
The Levitating Stone at Shivapur
Shivapur is a small town in the state of Maharashtra. The village is famous for its levitating stone that mysteriously levitates in accordance with a Muslim Sufi mystic who lived six centuries ago in India. Shivapur is located about 180 kms east of Mumbai. According to a legend, A saint named ‘Qamar Ali’ on his deathbed said that ‘when 11 men place their right index fingers under the stone and then jointly call my name, I will cause it to rise higher than their heads.’ And this actually happenes. The stone is still there and it still levitates.
Door-less Houses of Shani Shignapur
The Shani Shignapur Village in Maharashtra is a unique village where no house has doors. Moreover, they do not lock their precious things. It is believed that Lord Shani protects the village and he will punish the person who tries to commit any kind of crime here.
