Is your passport good enough?

How powerful is the Indian passport? If you compare it to its international counterparts, we don't have much to boast about. According to the Passport Index done by international residence and citizenship advisory firm Arton Capital, the Indian passport is positioned at 75 much below Zimbabwe, Uganda.

Here are the passports that work:

Singapore

The tropical island-nation has the world's strongest passport. It's the first time an Asian country has topped the list. Citizens of Singapore can enter the highest number of countries visa-free or with a visa on arrival.

US loses out

While Singapore quietly climbed the ranks, the American passport has fallen down since President Donald Trump took office, Arton Capital said in a statement. Turkey recently revoked visa-free status to American passport holders on the back of a diplomatic row.

Germany is No. 2

Germany ranked second, followed by Sweden and South Korea in third place. Meanwhile, Japan and the UK were among the nations tied in the fourth tier.

India at 75

The Indian passport is positioned at 75, much poorer than African countries like Zimbabwe (65), Uganda (66), Madagascar (74), Rwanda (72) and war-ravaged Sierra Leone (67).

Here's a face-saver

The Indian passport, however, still manages to fare better than its immediate neighbours Bhutan (rank 76), Nepal (89), Sri Lanka (89), Bangladesh (90), Pakistan (93). At rank 94, Afghanistan's passport is at the absolute bottom.

How does the index work?

By analyzing the access national passports have to countries around the world, the Passport Index assigns a "visa-free score" -- the number of countries a passport holder can visit visa-free or with visa on arrival.
