9 Banned Indian Movies The Censor Board Doesn’t Want You To See!
Indian Censor board is really popular all over the world for its ‘cut frenzy’. Some scenes here while some scenes there, it really does mess up the original movie a lot to make it ‘appropriate’ for public viewing. However sometimes, it managed to shred the whole film which resulted in the movie not seeing the light of day in Indian movie theaters. Be it a communal incident, a controversial assassination, a terror attack or an erotic fiction; here is a list of the most popular 9 banned Indian movies, which suffered in the hands of the wonderful Censor Board!
1) Mastizaade (2015)
A sex comedy- the description itself made the officials of censor board and revising committee choke. This movie starring former adult movie star Sunny Leone created quite the buzz when it was banned by CFBC in June 2015 for containing scenes that were considered ‘too steamy’ for Indian audience. However, the movie was revised and several reluctant cuts were suggested after which, the movie was cleared for release (hope they release an uncut version on DVD). Quite the ruckus for Sunny and the movie!
2) Kama Sutra (1996)
This Mira Nair film was based on love and what it was like in the 16th century. The movie was critically acclaimed for its excellent direction as well as acting by several actors. Sadly, due to excessive exposure, ‘explicit’, ‘immoral’ nature and many sensual love making scenes, the movie was never released for general Indian audience in theaters.
3) Kyaa Kool Hai Hum 3 (2015)
Needless to say, the people who have been witness to the prequels of this movie, have already complained of enough vulgarity and steaminess in the movies. Whereas the third part of the series, promised to bring much more ‘spice’. Word is that the much awaited flick Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 has been rejected repeatedly by the Censor Board because it has crossed all thresholds and is filled with vulgarity and sexiness beyond control. The Mandana Karimi (of Bigg Boss Double Trouble fame) starrer might just see the light of the day with over 30 cuts!
4) Fire (1996)
International acclaims, recognition and appeal but that is exactly what is never allowed in India perhaps. Deepa Mehta’s Fire was appreciated all over the world but for its taboo nature and the exploration of lesbian relationship, the movie was banned in India. The same year as Kama Sutra, surprised?
5) Black Friday (2007)
Black Friday was adopted from a book of the same name and was based on the multiple blasts that took place in Mumbai in the year 1993 and rocked the whole nation. Due to its sensitive nature and pre-judicial judgements, the movie was not allowed to release in India. The movie remains yet to be released till the blast conviction is over. Directed by Anurag Kashyap, we think its an absolute master piece!
6) Gandu (2010)
When the name itself sounds so offensive, what more can you expect with movie itself? This Bengali flick was originally a rap musical and became quite the hot topic of discussion due to its bold scenes. Nudity and Oral sex scenes in this black and white movie couldn’t be released for according to the Censor Board, it crossed all limits of sensibilities and provocation.
7) Unfreedom (2014)
Released for review quite recently in 2015, Unfreedom is a thriller that involves terror plot and lesbian bisexual relationship. Let alone one, the two taboos combined with the spice of steamy nude and sex scenes was too much for the Censor Board to take it in who rejected it on the grounds of ‘unnatural passion’ and arousal.
8) Water (2005)
Deepa Mehta directed yet another amazingly acclaimed movie which unfortunately wasn’t much pleasing for the Indian Censor board. The tainted exposure of the dark side of an Indian widow led this movie to be totally banned while protesters openly attacked the movie and even destroyed the sets.
PS: It was shortlisted for the Best Foreign Film at the Oscars as an official entry from Canada. Yes, our loss!
9) Sins (2005)
The name itself shows the dark side of something pure. The movie is an erotic story of a Kerala priest who gets sexually involved with a woman. With the depiction of lust, obsession and the defying nature for the society norms, Sins was banned by the Censor board to avoid clash with the Catholics.
