Now you must be wondering why I wrote this tag line or thinking I am joking. TATA Group, 96 business venture group, world’s top 50 groups according to market value and reputation. 65% stakes of TATA Group is held by TATA Sons which itself is held by various charitable organizations. JRD TATA Trust and and Sir Ratan Tata Trust are the main charitable organization. Thus 65% ownership is not counted as Ratan Tatas own personal financial statement, but on the various charitable organizations. But if we include this 65% ownership of TATA Sons as his personal property then guess! He is the world’s richest guy, net worth more than Bill Gates and Warren Buffet.
The peculiar CEO even not listed as billionaire by Forbes was born in Bombay, the first child of Naval Hormusji Tata. In 1962 Ratan Tata graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Architecture and Structural engineering. He joined the family business and started working at Tata Steel, following the advice of JRD Tata. The major success came for Ratan Tata as he turned NELCO into profit venture proving his credence. In 1991 Ratan Tata replaced legendary J.R.D as the chairman of TATA group. It was under his tenure that’s Tatas holding company increased its stake in companies TISCO(Tata Steel), TELCO(Tata Steel), Tata Chemicals and Tata Tea. Ratans Tatas two dynamic products TCS and Tata Indica(the first truly Indian Car) added a new dimension to TATA Group, reflecting his visionary thinking.
The trained pilot who still likes to fly his private jet is Padma Bhushan awardee and Forbes Asias Businessman of the year. Ratan Tata apart being the former chairman now also serves as senior member in various organisations and is a honourary member of the Prime Ministers Council on Trade and Economy.
Ratans Tata tenure of 21 years as a chairman of TATA Group have helped it to grow to $ 100 billion in revenue and the wonderful fact is that 60% came from overseas. Today Ratan Tata has officialy handed over the charge of TATA Group to Cyrus Mistry. Ratan Tata is one of the unsung heroes of the Indian economy and have establishes TATA as not a company but as a emotion to common man.
