Best Indian Fashion Trends of 2013
A tremendously fashionable 2013 ends today – This was truly an year of revelations and surprises in the fashion scenario. With our sartorial choices and tastes turning truly international this year, we also witnessed a major revolution in the Indian fashion front. The glamorous evening gowns and cocktail dresses faced fierce competition from the tantalizing saree gowns and spell bounding floor length anarkalis.
Whether it be Sonam Kapoor bringing back the nath (nose ring) fashion at Cannes film festival or Aishwarya Rai in gorgeous Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla anarkalis, this year was abuzz with ground breaking fashion statements in traditional Indian attire, fusion style clothing and fab boho chic & street smart fashion.
When it came to giving western outfits a jazzed up look, it was structured blazers in solid tones and neons and colored denims ruling the roost.
Half Sari
From the south was borrowed the half saree which took a designer avataar with its gorgeous embroideries and innovative designs. This South Indian fashion ensemble paved its way into the forefront of Indian fashion domain in 2013 through the mega hit movie Chennai Express. Deepika Padukone in her typical avadai thavani (half sari)avatar, effortlessly transformed this traditional outfit into a subtle Indian fashion trend staple.
While Manish Malhotra sprinkled the Southern flavor while styling Deepika, Sabyasachi can also be hugely credited for popularizing this traditional outfit by giving it a glamorous make-over. His PCJ Delhi Couture Week show and Lakmé Fashion Week Summer Resort 2013 show along-with JJ Valaya’s creations at India Bridal Fashion Week 2012 were hugely enomored with revamped versions of half sari. And when Bollywood hovers on any fashion element, it instantly becomes a trend in India, just like the half sari number worn by Deepika, Sridevi and Kalki Koechin at various events.
Floor length anarkalis
The anarkali trend from the North took a new, gigantic leap by combining the grandeur of the Mughal era with the evening gowns from the western part of the world.
A symbol of opulence and grandeur, this fashion trends has rocked the Indian fashion scenario. From weddings to parties, these floor length anarkalis added grace, poise and elegance to the Indian woman. We love Aishwarya Rai’s appearances in beautiful floor length anarkalis designed by Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla. Katrina Kaif started this trend which caught on successfully and spread like wild fire! We did an exclusive article on floor length anarkalis which capture the various style, patterns and designer floor length anarkalis in the market.
Cropped & printed pants
Legendary beauty Audrey Hepburn sported these pants which made a major comeback this year. The pros of cropped pants are it makes you look slimmer and lets you show off your shoes, heels and ballerinas in style. The variety of cropped pants was much appreciated: straight, skinny, trousers and boyfriend style.
Printed pants brought a feminine and colorful touch to the attire with its pretty floral prints, polka dots, geometric prints, unique motifs and so much more! Find out how these pants changed the fashionista’s wardrobe this year.
How to wear cropped pants?
Irrespective of your body shape, you can still pull off these pants effortlessly by ensuring the hemline of your trousers touches the spot where your legs tend to slim down rather than at the middle of your calf. Women, who are petite, should go for slim-fit cropped pants to look taller. Avoid wearing pants with flared hems, wide fits and cuffs, as they will only make you look shorter than your original height. Nude pumps and wedges go well with these pants.
You do not have to make deep research if you want to have some fashion cues as you can always count upon our fashion diva Sonam Kapoor. While promoting her movie, Raaanjhanaa, the leggy lash was seen donning cropped pants with blazer – a perfect fashion combo. She has paired her maroon cropped pants with a white blouse and a natty navy blazer. The nautical color combination perfectly complemented her personality.
In another instance, she was seen wearing a yellow blazer over a pair of blue harem pants and polka dot shirt. Cheers to her gusto to experiment with such fashion elements, which become a test-proven trend thereafter!
Distressed Denims
This year witnessed Bollywood fashionistas in nicked, ripped and distressed jeans which took over the boyfriend style. Paired with blazers and fitted jackets, this look offered a causal and grunge look. Adding to the flavor of boho chic, the distressed jeans were comfortable to get in and easily paired with hoodies, tank tops and casual tees.
Sheer Fashion
This year was also witness to delicacy and charm with flimsy, sheer fabric which was noticed in dresses, shirts, saree blouses and tops. This was huge trend in the spring/summer 2013 runways and was carried forward by Hollywood celebs like Kim Kardashian and Carrie Underwood.
Back home, our beautiful divas turned out in lovely sarees paired with sheer sleeved blouses and floor length anarkalis with sheer, delicate backs. While this is a tricky fashion trend, as it means treading the sensitive line between delicacy and unappealing skin show. Apart from Deepika heavily donning the sheer blouse, Priyanka Chopra and Illeana D’Cruz also followed her footsteps.
And how could we forget the historical Lakme Fashion Week, where Manish Malhotra had paid a tribute to the 100 years of Indian Cinema? Kajol’s rampwalk in sheer blouse and neon bordered saree is indeed one of the iconic moments from Indian fashion weeks 2013. Check out the sheer saree blouse story unfold here
Palazzo
This was the year of pants whether it be cropped or printed ones! But, an out-of-the-box fashion trend this year was the palazzo pants which are comfortable, loose and made a huge comeback from the yester years. These long, flaring trousers have an extremely wide leg which gives amazing comfort and hides the problem areas. Its structured silhouette gives a sleek and slim look in spite of its loose fitting.
We loved palazzo pants in chiffons, georgettes and crepes which feel buttery smooth and glide softly against the body. Worn with heels, these pants make you feel taller and lean! Whether it be colorful bold prints or solid tones, these palazzo pants were a great wardrobe staple this year.
Blazer
We loved the blazer trend this year which is a particular favorite in the winters. A perfect staple for layering, the blazer goes beyond the boundaries of corporate rooms and power suits. Whether it be for a casual look or party, the blazer can uplift any outfit ranging from jeans to summery dresses. Stealing a structured blazer from your boyfriend’s wardrobe or donning a solid colored blazer on that pretty knee length dress are our favorite fashionable moments!
Jumpsuits
It might have reminded you of a man up the ladder painting the walls in his grey overalls! But, the jumpsuit trend has carried forward beyond the humble overalls and has made a grand comeback with its sporty, perky designs and colorful patterns. From Miley Cyrus in her striped jumpsuits to Priyanka Chopra in uber chic whites, we love the look. From colorful printed ones to short glam ones, jumpsuits were quite a trend in 2013!
This was the extremely fashionable 2013 for you! Hope you loved the Indian fashion trends, outfits and dresses which ruled the roost this year!
